While there is no prescribed format for a thesis at the University of Calgary, most take the form of a “traditional” thesis, a “manuscript-based” thesis, or hybrid of the two. While both formats need introduction and conclusion chapters, the body of the text will vary. The main differences between each have been outlined below.

Read the Electronic Thesis Submission Manual and submit your thesis to the Graduate Studies – The Vault collection within the UCalgary PRISM repository. Your thesis will be added to the approval queue and reviewed by FGS.

Consider doing a non-traditional thesis and ensure you apply for ethics approval if needed. Know university policies and guidelines that affect your thesis and thesis writing: If your research may lead to a new idea, product or method, consider commercialization and connect with Innovate Calgary.

Ensure that all of the required thesis forms have been printed and submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) Office before submitting your thesis to The Vault. Due to COVID-19, we are unable to accept thesis forms in person. Please submit your final thesis forms by email to thesis@ucalgary.ca .
